SpringerImages

Springer last month launched SpringerImages (www.springerimages.com) a collection of 1.6 million scientific, technological, and medical images includes photos, tables and figures, charts, graphs, histograms, and other illustrations. Springer expects to add as many as 500,000 images this year. The service provides in-depth indexing and allows subscribers to use the material freely for non commercial purposes and unregistered user access to some 30,000 of open access images.

The indexing built to support retrieval draws on captions, keywords, sentences referring to the images and index terms assigned to the overall article. Search features include an advanced option that can reach sources, publication dates, image providers, image color, author, volume and issue numbers, image type, and DOI (digital object identifier).Image details appear with full bibliographic citations, those sentence extracts used for indexing, and-if licensed through SpringerLink-direct access to the journal articles or ebooks.

Springer are not alone in this space with not only other existing players but also potential new ones who would clearly like to extend their image database and scholarly offer.
